From Clive Paton and co at Ata Rangi in Martinborough New Zealand. ‘Crimson’ refers to the colour of this Pinot Noir and to the red flower of the Rata tree, which Clive, (also a conservationist), helped protect, and donates profits from sales of this wine. A smooth and elegant Pinot Noir brimming with strawberry and blackberry fruits.
TASTING NOTE: A deep crimson colour. On the nose: Full and fragrant with juniper, cranberry and red plum meld with spice and herbal notes of cardamon, pink peppercorn and dried oregano. On the palate: Bright and supple with plenty more juicy red fruits and a medium body with fine tannins that extend into a full long and juicy finish. 13.5% alcohol by volume.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: We suggest matching this wine with slow-cooked duck confit with fresh cabbage and root vegetable slaw or a decadent chocolate cake with cherries. It is great now but has good structure and plenty of flavour to ensure it will age for another 3-5 years.
ABOUT: Ata Rangi was established in 1980 in Martinborough, on New Zealand’s North Island, when Clive Paton sold his dairy cows and planted vines. Joined by sister Alison, wife Phyll and winemaker Helen Masters, the team have a reputation for delicious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It’s not easy to farm here as harvest yields are low, but there is plenty of sunshine to ripen the grapes and ocean breezes to give a lovely juicy freshness.
