Description

An excellent (and excellent value) from Delas Saint-Esprit in the Northern Rhone, a blend of Syrah, and Grenache. Complex, delicious and interesting wine that makes a good drink on its own on a cool evening.

TASTING NOTE: Lovely deep red/black colour which is starting to gain a garnet colour too On the nose: mixed spices, blackberries, gamey notes and hints of dark chocolate On the palate: medium to full body with smooth tannins, fresh but not high acidity. While some Cotes du Rhones can be fruity and youthful, even a little simple, this has more complexity (for its humble price) due to the greater % of the Syrah grape rather than Grenache. 14% alcohol by volume.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This is a smooth, complex, delicious and interesting wine that makes a good drink on its own on a cool evening. But there is enough fresh acidity, gentle supporting tannin and flavour to make a great food match too. Try this with a grilled steak and chimichurri, or a black pepper tofu dish for a vegan option. It would also be brilliant with a classic sausage casserole, a toad in the hole or good old sausage and mash! Drink now or till the end of 2024. No need to decant.

ABOUT: Delas are a large producer of Rhone wines, made by winemaker Claire Darnaud-McKerrow. In the early 90s, the business was purchased by Frederic Rouzaud who also owns Champagne Louis Roederer. Given considerable investment since, the wines are tip-top and in plentiful supply, both of which keep a wine buyer happy! Cotes du Rhone is a large area, across the south and north of the Rhone valley. In reality, most wine is from the southern part but Delas are northern Rhone specialists, so this is largely from the northern end.
