Description

From the Bolgheri region of Tuscany in Italy, this 2013 vintage is a blend of the four main Bordeaux grape varieties: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot. The wine has a vibrant red colour in the glass with a powerful nose that is complex with plenty of rich fruitiness. The palate constantly develops in the glass, with primary, bright fruity notes alongside more mature tobacco, balsamic and gamey notes. The firm texture and spice notes from 18 months in oak barrels combine with the naturally velvety tannins and balanced acidity of these Bordeaux grape varieties, and carry onto a long ripe finish. 14% ABV. Enjoy now or age easily for another 6-8 years in half bottle.

The 2013 vintage was characterised by mild and very rainy weather, which caused a delay in the budbreak of the grapes. The early summer was perfect and dry with plenty of sun, with a few spikes of intense heat. The slow start and even temperatures saw delayed ripening and gradual development of the berries after the hottest period had passed, resulting in a firm-structure, classic style which is great for longevity of the wine. Seasonal rainfall in August aided in lowering the temperatures, which helped preserve the aromatics of the grapes. Harvest began in early October with mainly sunny weather without excessive heat.

Founded in 1981, Ornellaia is considered to be one of Italy’s leading wine estates and is known for making a ‘Super-Tuscan’ blend. It was founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and is situated near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, south of Pisa. See ornellaia.com for more
