Description

One of the success stories of South Africa, the Chocolate Block is just one of the great wines produced by Boekenhoutskloof. It’s a smooth red blend of 74% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Viognier, from Swartland vineyards that are a brilliant allrounder, and a perfect wine to drink with BBQ!

TASTING NOTE: An attractive deep purple in the glass. On the nose: It’s filled with intense aromas of black fruits including currants and berries, alongside liquorice and white pepper, dark plums, and notes of cocoa. On the palate: Full-bodied and rich in flavour; it’s fruity with berry, spice and dark chocolate notes that continue from the aromas. The tannins are silky-smooth in texture, gently supporting the flavour and moderate acidity with a long, fruity finish. 14.5% alcohol by volume.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: We’d suggest that, with its bold flavours and richness, The Chocolate Block will pair wonderfully with braised lamb shanks, its full, fruity flavour makes a great barbecue wine for summer! For a great vegetarian match, try roasted heirloom carrots, farro toasted hazelnuts and herbed creme fraiche. Enjoy now until winter 2025.

ABOUT: Something of a wine legend, Marc Kent, the owner, and winemaker of Boekenhoutskloof winery in South Africa also produces The Chocolate Block. While Boekenhoutskloof is based in Franschhoek (it was established in 1776 and means ‘ravine of the boekenhout’, an old Cape beech tree), and makes a range of wines from Syrah and other French grape varieties (look out for Porcupine Ridge, the Wolftrap and Porseleinberg wines too), The Chocolate Block is from vineyards in Swartland further north.
