Description
Petit-Figeac is a wine made by the Manoncourt family at Chateau Figeac, in Saint-Emilion. Chateau Figeac is rated as a Premier Grand Cru Classe in Saint-Emilion and rightly so, with distinctive gravelly soils up and emphasis on more Cabernet Sauvignon than many of its neighbours. Petit-Figeac is described as the second wine of Chateau Figeac, made from younger grapevines and a different selection of grapes but is still very much an impressive wine, not least in 2016. It is slightly lighter-bodied than the ‘Grand Vin de Figeac’ but with plenty of trademark, fine berry aromas and mixed herb and spice. The blend of 41% Cabernet Franc, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot in 2016 gives a very typical, poised, structured red Bordeaux that is a bargain, in relative terms, given the price. While it’s more approachable than the Grand Vin, it remains a wine that can age easily for 4-5 years in its current mould, and another 5 or so as it matures fully. 13.5%.
